Bolt nears 50 sub-10 clockings

first_imgUsain Bolt could log his 50th sub-10 seconds 100-metre clocking in 2016. Bolt, the 2008 and 2012 Olympic 100 and 200 metres champion, has already run 45 such races in his career. With the Olympic Games in the offing, he could well reach the milestone next season. The tall man moved his total up by four in 2015 with twin times of 9.87 seconds in the London Diamond League meet and clockings of 9.95 and 9.79 at the World Championships. Hampered by a back injury in 2015, he chose not to race after the World Championships. If he is fit throughout next season, he might even surpass retired American Maurice Greene, who broke the 10-second barrier 53 times. Greene has the second highest total of sub-10 times, far behind Jamaica’s Asafa Powell, who has 93 of them. Greene might also be overtaken by fellow American Justin Gatlin. The 100-metre runner-up to Bolt in both the 2013 and 2015 World Championships, Gatlin has 46 sub-10 races under his belt. He, too, should reach his half-century in 2016 if he stays as fast as he has been recently. Gatlin fired off 10 sub-10-second marks in 2013, eight in 2014 and seven in 2015. In 2008 and 2009, when he set world records of 9.69 and 9.58 seconds, respectively, Bolt reeled off fast times almost at will. In 2008, he beat 10 seconds 10 times, with seven more in 2009. Next on the list of sub-10 mass producers are 2007 World champion Tyson Gay and his USA teammate Mike Rodgers. The latter has crossed the 10-second threshold 38 times, with Gay hitting the target on 36 occasions. Statistics for this article were drawn from www.alltime-athletics.com.last_img read more

Mourinho planning to catch City next season

first_img0Shares0000Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was furious with his side’s sloppy defending as they made a host of mistakes that allowed Spurs to claim the joint second fastest goal in Premier League historyMANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Feb 3 – Jose Mourinho is following the example of Manchester United predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson by forging a plan to catch Manchester City next season.Mourinho has admitted defeat in the Premier League title race, with United an ominous 15 points behind City with just 13 games remaining. However, the United boss is already looking towards the 2018-19 campaign to overhaul Pep Guardiola’s side.He is taking a leaf out of Ferguson’s book after United were beaten to the Premier League title by Mourinho’s Chelsea in both 2005 and 2006, before going on to reclaim the championship themselves.“I always remember Sir Alex said in 2005-06, when we won the second title with Chelsea, that we [United] need to improve a lot because they’ve raised the bar to such a level,” said Mourinho.“They [Chelsea] won two titles in a row – the second title was easier than the first – and then the biggest manager in the Premier League said United needed to improve a lot.“That was the click for the improvement of the team. In 2006-07, United won the title back.“It has to be like that. “That’s why every match until the end of the season is an important match for us. It’s not just about the points and finishing in the top four, which is important.“We must try to finish second, try to play the best we can and improve the players individually the best we can and be the best possible team at the end of the season.“Then we must try to start next season in a good way, like we did this season, but try to be consistent and not to lose points like we did in some matches where we shouldn’t.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more
