All remaining gates on seasonal roads on the province’s western Crown land will be opened Monday, May 12, at noon, for motorized vehicle access. The province has already opened seasonal road gates in the St. Margarets Bay and East River areas because roadbeds there had hardened enough to accept the weight of vehicles. Now, all seasonal roads in the western region are ready. There may still be wet sections, so caution is advised. Gates leading to protected wilderness areas will stay closed. A map of the seasonal forest roads on western Crown land showing opened and closed gates is available at www.novascotia.ca/natr . The road gates on all western Crown lands formerly owned by Bowater were closed to motorized vehicles in April to protect the roadbeds and as a safety precaution to protect vehicle drivers. Damage can be expensive to repair and vehicles can get stuck in remote wooded areas where cellphone coverage is weak and personal safety could be at risk.
